I took a flying trapeze class with Philadelphia School of Circus. I am talking about being 25 feet in the air. This class is a basic class on learning some twirls, getting in the air, and having fun. It’s a class like no other and it’s here in Philadelphia. If you love challenging yourself, being in the air, and looking for something different than this is for you. Also this was what my anxiety needed surprisingly. Nothing like conquering what you think you can’t
Trapeze Training
You aren’t just thrown into this. You learn the basics of how to stand. In addition the way your hands and feet are placed it will help you to be able to do better in the air. The whole premise isn’t about if you are skilled in what you do. You will do better the more you are able to hold the bar and let go and listen. If you can listen you can take this class. You must be at least 6 years of age and older. After you learn the basics on the ground you are placed in a harness belt and the flying can start.
Fear of Heights
A lot of people who are afraid of heights may consider this class not for them. We had about 10 or so people in our class. There was one girl who was afraid of heights. i don’t know what her reasons for taking the class but I will say that she was the best amongst us. So fear is real and true but it doesn;’t mean that it has to stop you. This girl was not only better in everyone else in form but she was the first one to go up. You are taken up the ladder to the 25 feet, instructed on how to stand and more and then you jump.
Flying Trapeze Class Pricing
The pricing is $65 per person per class. Class is 2 hours long. It takes that long to give everyone the opportunity to go through and jump and fly. The classes are stopped at 10 people. This is to keep the class big enough to instruct but small enough to be intimate. There are options to make it a private class etc or buy more classes in bulk to.
What to Expect in Flying Trapeze Class
Come about 15 minutes before your class. You must check in and sign in. You will be asked to sign a liability waiver. This is standard for these types of activities. Bring sunscreen. Being that high up in the air you will burn. Also bring a water bottle with you. If you are bringing a signed up friend-you will be lined up opposite of that friend. This is great so you can both film each other during your flying. Also be prepared to take your shoes off. Have socks on that you don’t mind having on the ground. As of now you will need to wear your masks when you walk into the building but not when you are outside for the class.
Little More Information
There is ample parking behind the School of Circus on Cliveden Street off of Green Street. It is easy to find if I could find it. I tend to get lost often. So plan enough time to get there to park too. Once parked its an easy walk to the side entrance. You will definitely not miss it. For what to wear, wear pants that cover at least your knees. This is important for when you are on the bar and having to tuck your legs.
That bar can get hot so leave the cut off shorts at home. Most of us had on some sort of sweat pants. Mine was snug and that was fine for the class. Also wear a shirt that covers your midriff. Also since the class is held outside should there be a need to cancel they will contact you in enough time and rearrange a time. You will always receive an email the day before with all of the information that you need.
Blooper Moments in Trapeze Class
I fell off the bar the first two times I went off. This means as soon as I got onto the bar and would have started swinging the weight of the bar took me down into a safety net. My 10 year old son did a way better job than me. I also have to say I do have a dislocated shoulder injury from years ago that prevents me from having strength in that arm. I knew I would slip off. But sweet victory when I finally did it the right way. You couldn’t tell me anything until the next day. You will be sore regardless of you having an injury or not.
Also as a testament to my anxiety that also got the better of me in the beginning. I had to keep reminding myself that I am safe, fine, and that this is meant to be fun. Once I said that I did it. It’s crazy how it wasn’t about the height as much as the bar that kept getting under my skin.
I personally loved the class and would go back. It is well worth the price. I love doing things that are different and this is it. No better thrill than being up and letting go. It was therapeutic for me. If you want to see me in action, go to my Instagram.
Thank you to the Philadelphia School of Circus and Aversa PR for having me. Who’s ready to fly high?
