Mental Wellness and Self Care Queen

Winter

Happy First Day of Winter. If Winter is your favorite season you probably are in heaven. However if Winter is the start of what is called Winter Blues, tune in. Winter Blues is what some people associate with Seasonal Depression and more. So how and what kind of self care can you add into the Winter that can make your Winter Blues a little less effective.

Winter Blue Tools

It’s no secret that from the middle of the Fall, when sunlight is a little more scarce that we tend to dread the changes in the seasons. There are a few things that we do not like to do when it gets cold. Like we tend to want to work out, get outside in the cold, or we disassociate with others or become less interactive. Self care especially in the Winter months need to be a little more frequent. Here are a list of things you can do in the colder months:

  • Add pops of color into your home, wardrobe, or office -I also add a pop of color out of season to my nails as well like a bright yellow or pink
  • Take an online class-a new skill is a great way to try something new
  • Have a pajama party-invite friends, have family over, etc.
  • Do seasonal events just like you did for the holidays
  • Plan a weekend getaway-whether you explore a new city or country add a little travel to your world
  • Send letters to loved ones
  • Join a book club
  • If winter is your thing go snow tubing, skiing,  or some other winter activity
  • Take a walk or run (bundle up)

Organization in the Winter

With so much time being indoors due to winter storms or more, use your time wisely. For instance go through your closet and declutter. Anything that no longer fits or doesn’t give you joy, get rid of it. Make space for some new things. Reorganize your pantry. As many will start the move to better wellness the pantry is the best place to start. You can control what comes into your home. If eating a more balanced diet is your goal start with the food that comes into the home. You might not want to be a minimalist but you can definitely find ways to eliminate waste. Donate things to others who may need them.

Lights and the Winter Blues

I learned a few years ago that the lighting in our home and workplace matters. When I first realized that I dealt with seasonal depression, I was taught that natural lighting is important. There are plenty of people who’s home lack good natural light. Even when  it’s cloudy, raining, or snowing open you blinds. It helps. If you need an artificial light I like to use this one from Amazon. Add light into your world.

Fresh Air

I know that it feels too cold to be outside. However the same rule of taking a walk or more still applies in the Winter. So bundle up. Take a walk or brisk walk. Find like-minded people to get out or hold each other accountable.  Personally for the past few years, I have taken this very advice. I can’t guarantee you that you will feel amazing this Winter. However, it’s important that the more we know ourselves it makes it a little easier to be able to concentrate on your wellness.

Wellness Winter Plan

Call or phone a friend. I learned a few years ago in the beginning of my seasonal depression, I am watchful of what I need. Things like  making sure that if and when I am not feeling right I am honest about it. I know we are taught to keep to ourselves. Don’t let your mental health be concealed. Find someone you trust to be open with.  My therapist and I also have a plan in place with different check ins. If talking to someone doesn’t help, I initiate one of the above self care modes. If they fail I immediately call for an appointment and more.

Winter can be as fun as you like. You can also be aware of what you need during this season. Whatever you need during this time-be honest.
