Mental Wellness and Self Care Queen

Macbeth in Stride is the newest offering at Philadelphia Theatre Company and the performance will knock you over with excellence, pride, and amazing chops. If you love the story of Macbeth this story turns it on its head from the perspective of a Black woman in a way that I have never in life see again. I was honored not only to be in the audience but to have my oldest besides me seeing this exemplary showcasing.

Before You go to Macbeth in Stride

The performance is only 80 minutes long. By the time it gets to the end you want more. The show is encompassing of a concert style mixed with story telling like you have never seen. Get to the showing about 30 minutes before. This will allow you to get concessions, view the lobby that has so many things to see to prepare you for the show. The show is magnetic so expect to see theatre fog, strobe lights, loud music and more. This show is good for any age but ages 13 and up would be the recommended appropriate age. Parking is either via street or using several lots nearby.

Macbeth in Stride’s in Song

As a daughter of a choir director where my mom had me rehearse songs in our living room, I appreciated the talent that is every singer involved. For instance, there is so many different song options and genres that are used. This show encompasses every note, and the band is a character of its own. The switch between song and monologue is genuinely wrapped in pure ecstasy. You are not an audience member but a participator. In this production its okay to be loud, dance, clap, or whatever form of expression and call back that you choose to do. It reminds me of being in church, concert hall, and jazz café all wrapped into one.

The Phenomenal Cast

This 5-cast ensemble along with the band delivers. Each of them are not casting as associates’ actors but they are their own main characters in their own right. Each of their energy was magnetic. I was proud to see all these amazing Black women coming together to represent a movement almost like a cry of what it would look like to have black women do what they do best, take their rightful place in the world. Each of them caught me and my daughter’s attention for so many ways.

For instance, there were times when each of them seemed to have their own messaging of what it would be like to be free to be in charge instead of an afterthought like Shakespeare showcased Lady Macbeth. It felt empowering. It was like having my battery charged after a long week.

Opening Day After Party

One thing that I love about Philadelphia Theatre Company is that on opening days it’s the best time to come. They always throw an amazing after show party. The party featured amazing beers and wines plus such great food. For this production I enjoyed the before and after show DJ who really showcased such a flow featuring some of theatre’s most beloved scores. My daughter and I really had a great time. If you ever able to come to an opening day showcase make your way.

If you have enjoyed the stylings of Shakespeare and love when theatre takes these stories and flips them to give a modern spin this is your show. Not only that this is one showing that missing it will be felt so don’t allow that to happen. The show is happening now until November 19th. Bring your family and friends and enjoy this moment. It is a place of safe, peace, and love. Thank you to En Route Marketing and Philadelphia Theatre Company for having me. Macbeth in Stride takes place at none other than Susan Roberts Theatre located at 480 S. Broad Street, Philadelphia PA 19146.
