An Evening of Light, Flavor, and Philanthropy at Franklin Square

There’s something magical about watching a familiar space transform before your eyes—especially when that transformation involves sparkling lights, handcrafted lanterns, and an atmosphere humming with excitement and generosity. I recently had the chance to attend Evening at Franklin Square, a dazzling kickoff celebration that previewed this year’s Chinese Lantern Festival. And let me tell you—it delivered more than just a sneak peek.

Cocktails, Cuisine, and Community

As the sun dipped below the skyline, Franklin Square lit up—not just with lanterns, but with energy. Guests mingled under open skies, sipping cocktails that danced with seasonal flavors while savoring gourmet bites curated by the culinary wizards at Cescaphe. Each dish was as much a visual delight as it was a treat for the palate—think elegant, flavor-packed hors d’oeuvres that whispered indulgence in every bite.

The atmosphere struck a balance between elevated and welcoming. It was a space where linen dresses and heartfelt laughs coexisted, where old friends reunited and strangers found common ground over craft cocktails and the glow of the lanterns just beyond the hedges.

Auction with a Purpose

The live auction kept the momentum pulsing, blending generosity with thrill. As paddles shot into the air, it was clear this crowd wasn’t just here for a good time—they were here to give back. All proceeds from the night benefit historic Franklin Square and its free family-friendly experiences, ensuring the magic of this public space endures.

First Look: 2025 Chinese Lantern Festival

And then—just as twilight turned to night—the very first look at this year’s Chinese Lantern Festival unfolded. Picture vibrant silk dragons coiling skyward, glowing lotus blossoms floating on dark water, and intricate scenes brought to life through thousands of hand-crafted lights.

This year’s displays feel more vibrant than ever before—the colors are deeper, the artistry more intricate, and the layout incredibly interactive. I genuinely enjoyed how the installations invited us to walk through, around, and within them, creating moments that felt personal and immersive. I found myself pausing more often, completely taken in by the craftsmanship and storytelling through light.

And I’m not done. With the festival now officially open and running through August 31st, I’m already planning to return several times this season to soak in new details I might’ve missed the first time around.

What’s New in 2025

  • Full Bathroom Facility: A welcome addition making the experience even more family-friendly.
  • Festival Pass: For the first time, guests can purchase a pass that offers unlimited entry throughout the season—perfect for those who, like me, want to savor the magic more than once.
  • Expanded Entertainment: Three main stages will host a rich lineup of performances including Bodies in Balance, Chair Hand-Standing, Face-Changing, Hat Juggling, Juggling, Teeter Boarding, and Water Bowl Meteor—each one steeped in culture and pure joy.
  • Live Folk Artists: This year also welcomes artisans who’ll create live, traditional artwork on-site, offering an intimate window into cultural practices that inspire many of the lanterns themselves.

A Celebration Worth Returning To

This evening wasn’t just a party—it was a statement. That joy and beauty are worth investing in. That community gathering matters. That when art, food, and purpose align, the result is nothing short of luminous.
