What It Really Takes to Raise Screen-Smart Teens with Instagram

A Look Back at Instagram’s Family-Focused Event in Philly

On Wednesday, June 18, caregivers, educators, and community leaders gathered at Lilah Fishtown for something rare and powerful: an open, intentional conversation about parenting in today’s digital landscape. Hosted by Instagram as part of Meta’s Screen Smart Series, this Philadelphia stop focused on helping families explore healthy tech habits while honoring trust, transparency, and connection.

An Evening of Connection and Insight

The event reminded us that while tech evolves fast, our need for connection, guidance, and community is timeless. It wasn’t just a panel—it was a space where caregivers could share experiences, ask hard questions, and feel seen.

Expert Sessions and Live Q&A

Insights flowed from youth advisors, pediatricians, and body image experts, who spoke on emotional growth, healthy habits, and how to build trust in a digital-first world. Featured speakers included Jennifer Hanley, Yvonne Johnson, Hunter C, and Dr. Cara Natterson.

“The emotional part of the brain leads kids until their late 20s—that’s why they need our guidance, not just our rules.”

Instagram and Meta’s Family Tools: Support That Evolves With Your Teen

A key focus of the event was how Meta is reimagining digital parenting support with updates to Instagram’s Teen Accounts and the new Family Center—a resource hub designed to make co-parenting the digital experience more approachable and collaborative.

Safety & Privacy Features for Teens

  • Teen accounts restrict contact: no Messenger, tagging only by approved followers
  • Anti-bullying features like Hidden Words
  • Filters for sensitive content (sex, tobacco, alcohol)
  • Blurred sensitive messages
  • Teens under 16 need permission to go live

Wellness & Time Boundaries

  • 60-minute daily usage reminders
  • Mute notifications between 10PM–7AM
  • Encouragement to take breaks and build healthy screen habits

Parental Supervision via the Family Center

  • Set permissions for teens under 16
  • Receive alerts when settings or age information changes
  • Monitor activity with respect, not surveillance

This reflects Meta’s PPA approach: Positive, Practical, and Proactive—empowering parents without overwhelming them.

Staying in the Conversation

One of the most meaningful takeaways was that rules will continue to change, but our parenting values—curiosity, communication, and compassion—can remain strong. Whether you’re starting small or already deep in the digital trenches with your teen, the journey is shared.

Fun experience with Instagram and Meta

As we walked in we were warmly greeted by staff. They had great bites including Mediterranean food options and mocktails. We participated in some art work showcasing our family or ourselves. Each board had something different on it. It was a time to network and more.

From each discussion it was just a sense of warmth and great energy. As parents who are trying to do our best sometimes warmth is the best way to take on new information.
